CIT Says Bye to PayPal

Center for Independent Thought has terminated its PayPal account because of PayPal’s October 2022 threat to fine customers for “misinformation,” a determination their acceptable use policy stated would be at “PayPal’s sole discretion.”

 “After several Stossel videos were flagged by Facebook ‘fact-checkers,’ we realized that political activists have too much power over other people’s speech on social media.  We decided to take this precaution to protect donor funds and to send a message to PayPal that we will not allow activists to determine what is and is not misinformation,” said Rob Schimenz, CIT president.

“While PayPal claims that policy was posted in error and that it has been rescinded, the current policy still allows PayPal to declare information misleading and then fine or suspend the account holder.  We are not willing to allow PayPal employees to be the arbiters of truth,” Schimenz said.

CIT encourages its donors who have donated through PayPal to use their Network for Good platform instead.
